Packing for the Himalayas: the only list you'll need

Whether it's a Char Dham yatra or a Ladakh expedition, the Himalayas reward those who pack smart. Here's the short, no-fluff list.

Layers, always layers

Temperatures swing from warm sun to freezing nights. Pack a base layer, a fleece, and a windproof/waterproof outer shell. You'll wear all three at dawn and shed them by noon.

The medical kit

Diamox (after consulting your doctor) for altitude, basic painkillers, ORS sachets, sunscreen SPF 50, lip balm and any personal medication — in your hand luggage, not checked.

The things people forget

A torch, a power bank, cash (ATMs are scarce up high), a reusable water bottle, and sturdy broken-in shoes. Skip the heavy suitcase — a duffel or backpack travels far better on mountain roads.
